History of the Judicial System in Kushtia District
1. Origin During British Rule (1860s):
Kushtia was originally a part of the greater Nadia district during the British colonial period. In the 1860s, it emerged as a separate sub-division. From that time, basic judicial institutions like the Magistrate’s Court began functioning. The administrative and judicial activities were initially centered in Chunakhola, now part of Kushtia town.
2. Formation of Kushtia as a District (1947):
After the partition of India in 1947, Kushtia was officially declared a district. With its establishment as a district, judicial infrastructure like the District and Sessions Judge Court, Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, and other civil and criminal courts were set up. The judicial system continued to develop gradually.
3. Separation of Judiciary from Executive (2007):
In 2007, the judiciary of Bangladesh was officially separated from the executive branch. As part of this reform, the judicial system in Kushtia became independent and came directly under the supervision of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The District and Sessions Judge Court began operating independently from the district administration.
